Marikina’s Pride : Socio Cultural Impacts of Local Tourism Products

Marikina City a vibrant valley, a catch basin for the surrounding mountains was once an area where fishing and farming are the main source of livelihood for the locals. In the 1887 its shoe-making industry took off. A man by the name Kapitan Moy is the one responsible for the improvement of the city’s economy through shoe-making. Today, Marikina is most commonly known for being the “Shoe Capital of The Philippines” due to their progress in that industry throughout the years. The locally made shoes were not only recognized as better-shoes, competition tightened thus less and less people preferred locally-made shoes and after some time, local shoe manufacturers decreased by half. Given that the city has made various representations, monuments, museums and many more that commemorates the humble beginnings of their shoe-making industry, we cannot deny the fact that globalization and major imports of shoes have had the city of Marikina deal with a major efflux of buyers, resellers and market in general. This paper focused on the effects of globalization to this local industry using the three aspects of sustainable tourism – economic, envronmental, and socio-cultural.
