Implementation Of Green Hotel Standards And Guest Satisfaction Of An Eco Lodge In Baguio City

The impact businesses have on the environment and society is a growing concern that is at the forefront of any country’s agenda. External pressures from stake holders force organizations to incorporate environmentally related actions into their business processes. According to Sloan et al. in the book Sustainability in the Hospitality Industry-Principles of Sustainable Operations, the accomodation sector, comprising of hotels, motels, resorts, and other forms, has the highest negative influence on the environment of all commercial buildings. Sustainable hospitality operations or called “green or eco hotels” have the goal of reducing their effect on the environment and society. This study investigated the relationship between the green standards implemented by an eco-lodge and its effect on customer satisfaction. This study used the descriptive-correlational research design, specifically the quantitative approach to measure and statistically analyze the variables, which are the dimensions of green practices or standards implemented by the eco lodge and its relationship to customer satisfaction. Identified eco lodging establishment in Baguio City will be the focus of the study. A purposive sample of 189 respondents, who were all guests at one time in the identified eco lodging establishment, were asked to answer a survey questionnaire, which is divided into three parts, the first part focused on the demographic profile of the respondents, while the second part highlighted the extent of implementation of the twenty-seven (27) green practices that are all based from the ASEAN Green Hotel standards and the last part measured the level of satisfaction of the respondents. The result of the survey revealed that the average extent of implementation of green standards by the eco lodge as perceived by the guests is 1.81, in which guests moderately agreed that the eco lodge is indeed implementing the green practices, on the other hand, the average guest satisfaction is 1.75 or guests strongly expressed their satisfaction. Using the Pearson-R statistical tool, the result showed that there is high positive correlation between implementing green practices and guest satisfaction, with a numerical value of 0.87. This study showed that administering environmentally-friendly practices in the operation of a lodging establishment positively impacts guest satisfaction.
