Potential Tourism Growth of Golo Island, Occidental Mindoro, from the Lens of the Local Community of Barangay Bulacan and Talaotao

The tourism industry in the Philippines significantly contributes to national economic development by transforming the country’s rich natural resources into diverse tourism opportunities. Among the lesser-known destinations is Golo Island in Occidental Mindoro, part of the Lubang Group of Islands. With its expansive coastline and strategic location under the municipality of Looc, Golo Island presents untapped potential for economic and cultural growth through tourism. This study aims to assess the potential for tourism development in Golo Island from the perspectives of the local communities in Barangay Bulacan and Barangay Talaotao. A qualitative research design was employed to capture detailed insights, using snowball sampling to effectively reach 20 key participants in the community. This approach allowed the researchers to gather a wide range of perspectives, offering a comprehensive understanding of how tourism influences local dynamics, including economic opportunities and social cohesion. Thematic analysis revealed key patterns such as recognition of the island’s tourism potential, concerns over environmental sustainability, and the impact on cultural and social practices. Common issues identified include limited infrastructure, lack of government support, and the need for responsible tourism planning. Narrative analysis further enriched the findings by providing personal accounts of how tourism affects the daily lives of residents, paving the way for their aspirations, concerns, and lived experiences. The results indicate a strong community interest in tourism development, driven by the hope for improved livelihoods, infrastructure, and recognition. However, addressing challenges such as transportation barriers and environmental risks is crucial for sustainable progress. The study concludes with strategic recommendations to guide inclusive, eco-conscious, and community-led tourism initiatives that align with the island’s natural and cultural identity.
